There are many reasons why Central Virginia is one of the best areas in the US for raising a family — ranging from the reassuring safety statistics to the beautiful weather to the impressive school districts and much more. But one of our favorite aspects of central Virginia is the sheer amount of family-friendly fun to be had. The state is brimming with opportunities for recreation and adventure. Here are a few activities worth highlighting.
- Children’s Museum of Richmond and the Science Museum of Virginia. Situated within a block of each other in the beautiful heart of downtown Richmond, these well-loved museums make a perfect combo for families of all types. The younger kids will love the hands-on fun offered by the children’s museum, and teens and grownups will enjoy the impressive and frequently updated exhibits of the science museum. And if you are looking to add a bit more fun and exploration to the day, then you will be happy to hear that there are over a dozen other museums in and around the downtown area!
- Charlottesville, VA. If you prefer small-town quaintness to big city hustle and bustle, then perhaps a trip to Charlottesville would be the perfect family outing for you! This historic central Virginia town packs quite a punch for its size, offering an incredible variety of activities that can hardly be fit into a single trip. Two of the most important highlights are the historic downtown mall, and Monticello, the former home of Thomas Jefferson.
- Fall Festivals. There are dozens if not hundreds of festivals held all year round in central Virginia — but autumn in particular boasts an impressive array of celebrations. No matter what your interests may be, you are sure to find a festival for you and your family somewhere nearby. A few local favorites include the Urbanna Oyster Festival, the King Street art festival, the Richmond Folk Festival, and the Pumpkin Village Fest in beautiful Leesburg, Virginia.
- National and State parks. Camping, hiking, swimming, or just relaxing — there is a lot of fun to be had in the great outdoors. And nature lovers are sure to appreciate the wide selection of state and national parks that are all within a stone’s throw of cities such as Richmond, King William, Mechanicsville, Newport News, and more. A couple of our favorites include Shenandoah National Park, First Landing State Park, and Great Falls Park.
Bonus location — Washington D.C. Speaking of cities, we would be remiss if we did not mention Washington D.C. as a popular destination for families in the Central Virginia area. Just a short drive from most cities and towns in the area, Washington is more than just the nation’s capital — it is also one of the most culturally rich, diverse, and entertaining cities in the country, offering virtually limitless possibilities for fun and relaxation.
