Halloween is one of America’s most beloved holidays. So much so that some people start preparing for the occasion months in advance. However, don’t fret if you’re only now getting started. There is still plenty of time to get your home ready for October 31st. Continue reading for 4 easy and fun Halloween tips for your home.
1) Do some fall cleaning
Before you can transition into a Halloween state of mind, you must transition into a fall state of mind. Some of the best ways to make the change from summer to fall are to store away porch furniture, vacuum, and dust. You should give yourself a clean start for the season, unless you want to use the dust as a Halloween decoration. Another thing you can do is switch out your curtains for something heavier and better at insulating your home. You can take advantage of this change to put up some Halloween themed drapes.
2) Break out the black, matte, spray paint
Now that your house is ready for fall, you can get it ready for Halloween. There are so many easy decorations you can make with household items and black, matte, spray paint. For some decorative “poison” bottles, you can take empty wine bottles, or full ones for that matter, and paint them black. If you splurge on blackboard paint, you can draw labels with chalk, but if not, there are hundreds of labels you can print off of the Internet. Another festive decoration can be made with black paint and a few birdhouses. Simply paint the birdhouses black, and position them as you wish on a shelf or table for an easy ghost town.
3) Get your house “outdated”
This is where the dust comes in handy. You’re always updating your house, why not “outdate” it for a change? To give your house an eery feel, cover your furniture with white sheets and use cheesecloth to create cobwebs both indoors and out. The sheets will make it look like your house was abandoned long ago, and the cobwebs will keep your guests on their toes, hoping to to run into the creatures who made them. With your home and guests in mind, we recommend that you give your house only the appearance of dilapidation. Don’t allow your home to be destroyed for the sake of authenticity.
4) Put a pumpkin on it
What is Halloween without a few–or a ton–of pumpkins? Today, Halloween fans have moved past the tried and true carved Jack-o-lanterns, and put their own twists on this classic decoration. Luckily, many of these twists don’t require handling the pulp and seeds of the pumpkin. Some of the easiest ways to decorate your pumpkins are to paint them or dress them up. A painted design, or googly eyes and a hat are both sure to make a statement. If you’re looking for something a little more difficult, you can try carving a design into the skin of the pumpkin without puncturing the rind. For those who really want to get their hands dirty, you can carve out your pumpkin and and insert a vase for some fall flowers or candles. These make a fun and festive centerpiece.
